9-year-old’s lemonade stand helps veterans

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A nine-year-old girl has one birthday wish this year— to help veterans.

Lorelei Aughenbaugh took full advantage of the Friday sunshine and opened up a shop of her own: Lorelei’s Lemonade to Help Veterans.

“It’s homemade, but it’s basically just sugar, water, lemon juice and ice,” Aughenbaugh said.

Her business statement is as clear as the sign in front of her stand reads.

“Help raise money for veterans,” Aughenbaugh said.

It’s all part of Lorelei’s ninth birthday wish. Instead of asking for gifts, she’s asking for donations to her Field of Flags fundraiser.

“A certain amount of money equals a certain amount of flags,” Aughenbaugh said. “And we’re going to put them up at the park.”

After weeks of fundraising last year, Lorelei raised over $1,500 for the Disabled American Veterans organization. In return, she was able to plant her own Field of Flags at Galway Park, part of a campaign that honors and supports vets. Lorelei says this year, that goal hasn’t changed.

“I don’t really care about the amount. It’s just fun to do,” Aughenbaugh said.

Two of her grandpas are also veterans.

Already off to a strong start, Lorelei’s raised over $600 this year. And no matter the donation amount, it’s sure to pour a little heart into your cup.
