Truth behind why you’ll never see a Costco brand mayonnaise – and what went wrong the first time

AN EVER popular favourite store for American families, Costco has much to offer shoppers in the way of great bargains.

But walk down its aisles, and you’ll never spot its own brand of mayonnaise – leaving this to its name-brand competitors.

Many shoppers will have long wondered why there’s no Kirkland Mayo on Costco‘s shelves.

But the answer to this question may surprise many shoppers – especially given the brand did once attempt to launch its own product.

A new video report explains what went wrong when the retail giant tried to branch out into this field.

“When Costco goes to make any new Kirkland product, it first looks at what the name brand is doing and then sees what it wants to change,” according to the WSJ.

“The usually means bringing down the price of the product.

“But sometimes, it’s changing the ingredients to make a product healthier.”

Costco had attempted to add Omega-3 to their mayo in a drive to make it healthier.

However, their ingredients were also less stable – and their attempt at a mayo became a flop.

As a result, Costco still leaves mayonnaise to its competitors.

However, the popular retailer still has plenty of offers for people and families.

The Sun previously reported on why Costco milk manages to stay fresher longer than that from other stores.

According to Reader’s Digest, there are a number of factors behind this.

One major reason is that Costco’s quality control means it audits its dairy suppliers annually.

The warehouse also conducts rigorous tests each batch of milk.

Stephen Robinson, founder of Outrank, previously told The Sun what things to always buy at the retailer.

He said: “Some things I would always buy in Costco are household items and cleaning supplies.

“The retailer is known for offering competitive prices on household items such as toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies.”

He added: “Bulk buying your groceries is a great way to save money at Costco.

“It is renowned for its bulk purchases, which can be a great value for items like rice, pasta, canned goods, and non-perishable pantry staples.

“I have found that buying these items in larger quantities can help save money in the long run.”

Costco membership sharing guidelines

Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they’ve been cracking down on offenders in recent years.

  • Primary Member Use: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it.
  • Household Card: Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
  • Authorized Cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn’t reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently.
