Costco sparks chaos with surprise prescription rule – and shoppers can no longer show up empty handed

COSTCO has sparked chaos with a surprise new prescription rule that means shoppers can no longer show up empty handed.

The policy has switched in a specific area of the warehouse retailer’s operation which could force shoppers to spend more than they wanted.

On the social media platform Reddit, a shopper revealed a massive policy change with Costco‘s Optical section.

They said that when they tried to update his new script, he was unable to do so if he was not buying something too.

They wrote on the site: “I just got a new script for glasses and stopped over to Optical.

“They used to enter the script for emergencies.

“I’ve used it twice when on vacation or business travel and broke my prescription sun-glasses.

“They could order me a new set and send them to the store at home.

“Today I was told there was a new policy and they don’t do it anymore.

“When did that happen and I’m curious the reason behind it.

“The person behind the desk wasn’t able to explain it.”

In the comments, shoppers had mixed responses, and even some Costco employees sought to clarify the situation.

One seeming employee at Costco wrote: “Not entering your RX unless you buy something is not store policy.

“It’s just that store making up its own rules, however, not shipping to another store is a thing. We don’t do that.”

While another contradicted this entirely: “We will put your rx on file for you.

“But we don’t (usually) make glasses then ship them to another warehouse for you.

“You have to pick them up where you order them.”

MIXED REACTIONS

Despite the complaints, there were some who don’t see anything wrong with this policy.

One policy defender chimed: “I don’t understand with modern portals and cloud storage why this is a miss.

“I have my script in my portal and my email box and it is available a few electronics away almost anywhere in the world.”

While another fumed: “…He doesn’t seem to be ordering any glasses at all.

“Apparently, he just wants them to enter the prescription so it’s ready just in case some day he changes his mind and decides Costco glasses might be nice after all?

“Which is, you know, weird.”

The US Sun has contacted Costco for comment on the policy, but did not hear back right away.
