The new NextGen Acela will connect the Northeast Corridor between Washington D.C., New York City and Boston along 457 miles of track.
The impressive new fleet of trains was assembled by rail giant Alstom in Hornell, NY ushering in a new era of high-speed rail.
Amtrak President, Roger Harris, said: “NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel.
“In just a few weeks, history will be made with the debut of NextGen Acela as we launch a new standard for American train travel.”
Five sleek new NextGen Acela trains are set to debut this month and the company plans to roll out 28 of the new trains by 2027.
The company will be rolling them out alongside the current Acela trains as they transition into a new fleet.
The NextGen Acela Experience
With a maximum speed of 160mph, the new trains will feature an impressive tilt system meaning a “smoother and quieter ride” according to Amtrak.
That’s around 10mph faster than the existing Acela trains.
With increased capacity, the NextGen Acela also has 27 per cent more seating with new ergonomic seats and extra legroom.
On board, passengers will also be able to enjoy premium features with 5G-enabled Wi-Fi and every new seat equipped with new power outlets, USB ports and reading lights.
They can also treat themselves to the new Café Acela onboard while enjoying fantastic East Coast views.
What’s even better is that the company have also expanded weekday and weekend schedules.
Travellers will be able to book their tickets through the Amtrak mobile app, Amtrak website or at station kiosks, offering a straightforward, flexible approach.
More details on how to book your place on the NextGen Acela trains will be released before the launch date.
More to come
The NextGen Acela is a key component of Amtrak’s broader fleet modernization plan, the company said.
They said it’s looking to upgrade its current fleet beyond the Northeast.
This includes the new Amtrak Airo which will debut on the Amtrak Cascades, Northeast Regional and East Coast routes.
The trains will also be the company’s first hybrid-electric powered cars reaching speeds of up to 125mph.
There will also be new and “more efficient Long Distance locomotives” as well as upgraded interior in coaches, dining cars, sleepers and sightseer lounges.
Plans are also zooming ahead on the West Coast for a high-speed train in California from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
Governor Gavin Newsom finalized plans for the project on Wednesday, but the future looks hazy.
