Amazon is aiming to take a larger bite into the delivery market with the expansion of its service.
It means customers can order groceries and have it land on their doorstep within the same day.
In a bid to drive customers towards its offering, the company is also making it free for Prime members.
Shares in other grocery companies, including titans like Walmart, took a tumble in the wake of the announcement, the WSJ has reported.
But up till now, Walmart’s delivery service has outpaced Amazon’s, according to eMarketer data.
However, Walmart’s stock dropped by 1.7% in the wake of the announcement.
And other companies that took a hit include DoorDash losing 4% and Kroger down 4.1%.
Amazon further plans to expand the service to 2,300 locations by the end of the year.
While Amazon is the world’s largest e-commerce company, it has just to achieve dominance in the grocery delivery scene.
This move is intended to boost the company’s presence in that market.
It comes after Costco sparked chaos with a new prescription rule that means shoppers can no longer show up empty handed.
On the social media platform Reddit, a shopper revealed a policy change with Costco‘s Optical section.
They wrote on the site: “I just got a new script for glasses and stopped over to Optical. They used to enter the script for emergencies.
“I’ve used it twice when on vacation or business travel and broke my prescription sun-glasses.
“They could order me a new set and send them to the store at home.
“Today I was told there was a new policy and they don’t do it anymore.
“When did that happen and I’m curious the reason behind it. The person behind the desk wasn’t able to explain it.”
