No cause of death has been revealed at the time of writing but the record breaker’s younger brother Randy confirmed he had been struggling with health issues in recent years.

The sea enthusiast set the world record for most consecutive days of surfing in February 2004, when he amassed 10,407 in a row.

The American began the unique challenge in September 1975 in Bodega Bay.

The California native then racked up a total of 14,642 consecutive days when he finally had to stop 40 years later in October 2015 because of a minor medical procedure.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he surfed at least three waves every day.

Webster previously said: “I surfed every day during the swell.

“Each day, the waves got better and better. After surfing 85 days straight, my friend said, ‘You should try to surf for 100 consecutive days’.

“When I got to 100, the story was in the local newspaper. That publicity gave me a little pat on the back to make it to a year. So then the challenge became a year. And so forth.”

Tributes poured across social media for Webster after carving an incredible legacy.

Close friend William Beal told SFGate: “He was a surfer, that was his main thing, that was his life ambition.

“I don’t think he ever second-guessed it. I know he had a lot of good years here when it was not that crowded. I think he had a pretty well-lived life.”

A fan tweeted: “RIP Dale Webster (1948 – 2025). Legend.”

Another commented: “He’s surfing in heaven!”

This fan said: “He set a standard!”

And that one wrote: “RIP bro!!!”
