Pittsburgh Steelers hand $19m NFL record-holder wide receiver tryout on Tuesday to give Aaron Rodgers new threat

THE Pittsburgh Steelers will give a tryout to an NFL record-holder wide receiver to potentially give Aaron Rodgers a deep threat in the offense.

The Steelers need depth at the wide receiver position with just two-and-a-half weeks until the regular season.

Mike Tomlin and his Pittsburgh squad traded for two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf in an offseason deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

However, the Steelers still have a less-than-desirable wideout room after Metcalf due to the team trading star George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

The No. 2 wideout Calvin Austin III has been dealing with an abdominal injury since last month, and the No. 3 wide receiver Roman Wilson missed his rookie season due to injuries.

So on Tuesday, it was reported that veteran free agent wideout Gabe Davis is set to visit the Steelers, per ESPN.

Davis will be meeting with Mike Tomlin and the company for a second time this offseason as Steel City looks to add to their wide receiver group.

Pittsburgh will have competition for the 26-year-old, however.

After the former Jacksonville Jaguars wideout leaves the Steelers, Davis will be headed to meet with his former team, the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills were Davis’ first NFL destination.

He was the team’s fourth-round draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

During his four seasons with the Bills, Davis played in 64 games with 47 starts.

He posted 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Three of his four years saw him record seven touchdowns per season.

And Davis scored the most receiving touchdowns in a playoff game, with four scores in the 2021 AFC Divisional Round game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Bills would lose the contest in overtime, however, 42-36.

Davis played with the Buffalo Bills for four seasons from 2020 to 2023[/caption]

After leaving Buffalo, Davis signed a multi-year contract with the Jaguars but only played in 10 games before suffering a meniscus injury that ended his 2024 campaign.

He was released early in the offseason.

Davis will undergo more testing in Pittsburgh before visiting Buffalo for a visit, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

He would likely be the first wideout opposite Metcalf if he signs with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh will hope to improve its wide receiver room as they’ll soon prepares for their first game of the season against the New York Jets on Sunday, September 7.
