NFL SUNDAY icon Jimmy Johnson has revealed the brutal punishment he once used on his players during his tenure as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
The coach-turned-broadcaster opens up on his tough coaching methods in Netflix docuseries ‘America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.’

Johnson was head coach of the Cowboys for four years under owner and friend Jerry Jones[/caption]
One of the measures he employed on his way to becoming a two-time Super Bowl winning coach was to deny his players food on the flight home from a loss.
The 82-year-old said in the doc: “After that loss, we get on the plane and I am just fuming because of the way we played.
“The flight attendants start to serve the meal and I say ‘no, no meal. they don’t deserve to eat.’”
The coach, appointed as the second boss in the team’s history by owner and friend Jerry Jones, felt that such harsh punishments would help instil a winning mentality in the side.
He continued: “I wanted them to expect to win every single time they go out.
“I want them to be nauseated, to be sick in their stomach when they lose. Because that’s how I felt.”
His gambit appeared to have worked, with the coach turning a 1-15 season into consecutive Super Bowls in his four years with the team.
But the efficacy of his tactics did not dissuade his players from telling their honest views on the incident.
Legendary wide receiver and fellow broadcaster Michael Irvin said: “We couldn’t eat man we were starving. We can’t even eat on the damn plane?”
Five-time Super Bowl winner Charles Haley said: “He was a dictator. He was an a**hole, and he did not care what guys thought about him.
Johnson’s demeanour has improved somewhat since it seems, having a successful career as a face on Fox’s NFL Sunday coverage.
He announced his retirement in March after 30 years on America’s screens.
But now he has carried his TV talents over to his role in the new Cowboys docuseries.
