Storm Center PM Update: Thunderstorm chances tonight

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has once again been a hot day in KELOLAND with highs ranging from the 80s to 100s. Areas with a mix of heat and humidity in central KELOLAND are under a heat advisory until 7 PM MDT or 8 PM CDT this evening. Heat index values could climb up to 103 at times within this area.

Besides the heat, the next thing that is going to bring a change to our weather is a cold front passing through today. By the evening, the chance for showers and thunderstorms will develop in western South Dakota before becoming more widespread overnight.

Some storms have the potential to become strong to severe. There is a slight risk for severe weather for a portion of East River as storms could produce large hail, damaging wind gusts, and a brief tornado.

Temperatures for tonight will cool into the 60s for lows with winds staying on the lighter side. Most of southeastern KELOLAND will be dry as the activity stays to our north until tomorrow morning.

Once the rain and thunderstorms move out going into the afternoon, clouds will begin to decrease in central and eastern KELOLAND. Areas like western South Dakota could still deal with extra scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day. Otherwise, we will all get back into northerly flow, which means cooler air will come in and give us a break from the heat.

This will continue heading into the start of the week with our first taste of fall on the way as highs dip into the 70s. Along with that, a high pressure system will allow us to stay dry with plenty of sunshine in store for the week.
