The warning concerns Supergoop sunscreen in mousse form, which has gone viral among shoppers who love its lightweight, dewy consistency.
Anxiety is rising among shoppers who fear they may be unable to purchase the sunscreen.
The FDA released a statement saying the company had not yet completed an application process to show that its mousse sunscreen products are safe and effective.
Companies are required to submit an application to the FDA in order to market sunscreens lawfully.
This goes specially for those who sell sunscreens in a different from from oil, lotion, cream, gel, butter, paste, ointment, stick, spray, and powder, per the FDA.
Four other brands were sent the same letter after similarly failing to complete the application.
This included KI & C Care Organics, Kalani Sunwear, Vacation Inc. and Fallian Cosmeceuticals.
Fallian sells sunscreen under the brand TiZo.
IS THERE A DUPE?
With summer in full swing, it’s more important than ever to protect your skin from the harsh UV rays.
Shoppers can breathe a sigh of relief, as there are many other affordable dupes that can take its place.
For example, Five Below has a wallet friendly dupe, that is eerily similar to the high end range.
While the original version will set you back as much as an eye-watering $36, the Five Below products cost just $5 each – so it’s no wonder it’s become all the rage on social media.
One fan of the discount chain, Kimberly Mich, took to TikTok to show off some of her top finds from the Sugargirl collection, such as the Sun Down Cooling Lotion.
Infused with aloe vera, this summer must-have comes in a 8.45oz bottle that you can easily chuck in your beach bag before heading out for a swim.
Another firm favorite that’s sure to fly off the shelves is the Body Illuminator sunscreen – which offers both a broad-spectrum protection and a sun-kissed shimmer; it really is the ultimate 2-in-1.
Along these two beauty essentials, Five Below has also launched Sugargirl Sunshine Body Illuminator with SPF 30 and Hot Body Screen with bronze speckles.
One of the closest matches that Kimberly spotted at the discount store is Sugargirl Glowy Face Screen – Five Below’s dupe of Glowscreen SPF 40 that will cost you a whopping $38.
COMMITTED TO SAFETY
Supergoop! released a statement on the FDA letter, as obtained by Today.com.
It said: “At Supergoop! we remain committed to innovation in sun care and the highest standards of product efficacy and safety.
“The recent communication from the FDA regarding our PLAY SPF 50 Body Mousse is focused on product labeling and has nothing to do with its safety, effectiveness, or formula.
“We are working closely with the FDA to resolve this matter as we continue to uphold the high standards our consumers expect from us.”
How does sunscreen prevent aging?
Dr. Michael Aziz, an internist and the author of the upcoming book The Ageless Revolution, revealed five habits of young-looking people.
“Sunscreen protects your skin by acting as a barrier against harmful UV rays,” Dr. Aziz told The U.S. Sun.
“There are two main types of sunscreen ingredients: mineral and chemical.
“Mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide form a physical shield, reflecting UV light away from the skin.
“Without SPF protection, your skin may develop uneven pigmentation in an effort to shield itself from the sun’s rays, leading to potential sun damage such as sunspots and premature aging.
“Using sunscreen is essential to prevent this and maintain healthy skin.”
