Tropical Storm Kajiki made landfall in Thailand this morning, impacting upper northeastern regions before weakening and moving into Nan province by the evening. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in 40 provinces today, August 26.

Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain is expected in areas of northern, upper northeastern, eastern, and western southern Thailand. Central regions, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, will experience isolated heavy downpours.

Residents, especially in Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Trat, and Ranong, are advised to be cautious of severe rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas. This is due to Tropical Storm Kajiki currently over Laos, combined with a strong southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are experiencing relatively strong winds, with waves reaching heights of 2 to 3 metres and exceeding 3 metres in stormy areas. The lower Andaman Sea is seeing waves around 2 metres, increasing beyond 2 metres in stormy conditions.

Mariners are urged to exercise caution and avoid sailing in stormy areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are advised to remain ashore for now.

Residents along the eastern shores and the upper western southern coast should be cautious of incoming waves. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Kajiki, with its centre over Bolikhamxay, Laos, is expected to weaken into a depression over Laos and the upper northeastern region of Thailand this morning, before further weakening into a low-pressure area over Nan province by the evening.
