Walmart unveils new self-checkout design – store bosses say ‘it will give customers more choice’

WALMART has unveiled a brand new self-checkout design – and store bosses claim it will give customers more choice when paying for groceries.

The retail giant has overhauled one of its locations – completely revamping its front section to give local shoppers a better experience.

The site in Topeka has seen changes to its service area, where customers are directed when they need to pay for groceries.

The newly designed store is located at 1301 Southwest 37th Street, Kansas.

A spokesperson for the popular retailer, Mark Rickel, told 27 News the store is undergoing several changes to its checkout area to improve the shopping experience.

He said: “We’re always looking for ways to enhance the in-store experience, including checkout.

“Changes are made store-by-store, based on associate and customer feedback, shopping patterns, and business needs.”

The spokesperson detailed the new design and explained its benefits.

He confirmed that more self-checkout systems would be installed as part of the revamp.

And the number of staffed registers was also being increased.

He said: “At our SW 37th Street store, we’re upgrading the front end to better serve our customers.

“The new layout will feature self-checkout registers on both the grocery and GM sides, with more staffed registers in the center—giving customers the choice between self-checkout and traditional lanes.”

It comes after a checkout change at the beloved retailer sparked outrage among shoppers.

The retail giant has been making a few adjustments in recent years, and the response has been mixed.

One shopper said on social media: “So this is what we’ve come to at #walmart .. one checkout line open.

“They took out most of the self checkout lines! There are only four left and that line was wrapped around the corner into the frozen food section.”

The shopper also claimed that Walmart staff were “standing around” in a closed lane that could’ve been opened to mitigate the lines.

Some fellow customers eventually had enough, according to the customer, and began discussing abandoning their carts full of groceries worth hundreds of dollars and walking out, an increasingly common trend.

It also comes after clothing giant Primark copied Walmart with a receipt change which has stirred controversy among customers.

Some fear it signals a continued favoritism for digital and machine-based assistance at top retailers.

One longtime customer said on Facebook: “Primark upstairs now has self-service card machines, but you have to scan your receipt before you leave the area.

“Get the trying to make it convenient, but not if it gets busy kind of feels like machines are taking over and human staff will soon be obsolete.”

The UK-based chain started rolling out self-service systems overseas in 2022, per The Retail Optimiser.
