Rapid City Central mascot celebrates 100 years

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Rapid City High School began in 1923, and two years later the mascot of the Cobbler was created.

That mascot has continued with Central High School and will be showcasing the pride of being a Cobbler all year.

The staff at Central High School are using this 100-year celebration to emphasize the school motto.

“We really want to dig into what it means to be a Cobbler and keep that spirit and tradition alive. We have that phrase, ‘Once a Cobbler Always a Cobbler,’ we have a really strong community.” Assistant Principal Kayla McCaskell said.

The pride of being a Cobbler continues even after graduation.

“I’m a transplant to Rapid City, and the one thing that’s been amazing has been anywhere I go in the community is someone finds out that I’m the principal here, and they’re like, ‘hey, once a Cobbler,’ and it’s the one thing that unites us. Unites alumni and students today,” Central Principle Terry Lundeen said.

“I loved coming to school, and it meant everything to be a Cobbler back then as it does now. Former students that are teachers. I’ve had former peers that, when I was a student, are now teachers. So it’s just really cool to be able to see everybody in the community and how many people stick around,” McCaskell said.

Central also teaches students four core values – trust, compassion, stability and hope.

“Everywhere we go, we just hope that they lead with those things in mind, so we trust kids to do the right thing. We show up every day and we have hope for the future, we have goals, we have plans and that’s exciting,” Lundeen said.

They’re hoping that the excitement continues for many years into the future.

This year’s celebration of the Cobbler will include the 100-year theme for many special events throughout the school year, showcasing the pride of being a Cobbler.
