Target confirms it will not close its stores despite Costco shutting all 634 locations for 24 hours

TARGET has confirmed that all of its nearly 2,000 stores will remain open for business, scooping up customers as retail rival Costco turns off its lights.

The warehouse club is plotting to temporarily shut down all 634 of its US locations for 24 hours in the coming days, leaving shoppers to turn to Target.

Costco and Target are two of the largest retail giants in the US, with net worths in the billions.

The chains pull in millions of dollars across their store fleets each day, meaning that closing down locations – even for just 24 hours – can be quite costly.

For this reason, both Costco and Target limit the number of days they shut off their lights – an effort that not only offers convenience to shoppers, but also helps them to rake in as much money as possible.

Costco, however, will lose roughly $730 million in revenue in just days as it shuts its doors for Labor Day on Monday, September 1.

In addition to Labor Day, the warehouse club closes for 24 hours on the following US holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Easter Sunday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Federal Holidays

There are 11 federal holidays. Here are the dates for 2025:

  • New Year’s Day: January 1, 2025
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 20, 2025
  • Presidents’ Day: February 17, 2025
  • Memorial Day: May 26, 2025
  • Juneteenth: June 19, 2025
  • Independence Day: July 4, 2025
  • Labor Day: September 1, 2025
  • Columbus Day: October 13, 2025
  • Veterans Day: November 11, 2025
  • Thanksgiving Day: November 27, 2025
  • Christmas Day: December 25, 2025

Target, on the other hand, will remain open this coming long weekend, generally operating on its regular hours.

The retailer only shuts down on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Shoppers looking to buy party supplies or get their hands on Labor Day deals on Monday can also hit up a number of other major supermarkets across the country, including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Kroger, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods.

Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and other retailers will also be open for Labor Day, as will pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens.

Major restaurants and food chains will likewise welcome in guests on Monday, with some even offering special deals for the holiday.

OFF LIMITS

Although most grocery stores, retailers, and restaurants will remain open – potentially with modified hours – on Labor Day, other services will be unavailable this coming Monday.

Because Labor Day is a federal holiday, most post offices, banks, and non-essential government offices will shutter temporarily.

For example, delivery services for regular mail or packages from USPSUPS, and FedEx will not be provided.

Although ATMs will still be accessible, funds deposited on Monday will not be processed until the following day.

Americans can also expect stock markets, schools, and libraries to be closed for the federal holiday, and your trash pickup may be impacted as well.
