Defense shines in Jacks’ season-opening win

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — SDSU claimed a 20-3 win over Sacramento State Saturday to open up the 2025 season at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

The Jackrabbits outgained the Hornets 430-131 and held a 240-24 advantage on the ground. The Jacks held Sac State to one yard per carry, while they registered 4.3 yards per rush.

Chase Mason threw for 190 yards, and Julius Loughridge ran for 159 yards. But the defensive stole the show in the opener.

“Proud of the defensive line and even in the secondary, they challenge us on a ton of deep passes,” SDSU head coach Dan Jackson said. “And I know they hit one of them, but for the most part, we were in position. And I think when you practice and prepare the right way, you earn the right to play with confidence.”

“It’s easy to play football when you’ve got a defense like that, that lets up three points,” SDSU quarterback Chase Mason said. “And you would love for them the only let up three points every game. I know we have a chance every single game, no matter who we play with our defense.”

The Jacks are on the road at Montana State next week.
