Dodge and Ram forced to recall 219,000 vehicles over dangerous rear-view defect that can lead to crashes and injury

DRIVERS have been left at risk after a major recall hit over 200,000 Stellantis vehicles.

More than 219,000 Dodge and Ram vehicles have been recalled, with thousands of drivers unknowingly putting their lives at risk every time they shift into reverse.

More than 219,000 Dodge and Ram vehicles have been recalled after an issue with the rearview camera.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a safety recall on 141,906 Ram ProMaster vans and 77,671 Dodge Journey SUVs across the US.

Affected models for Ram were manufactured between May 2019 and November 2021, while the affected Dodge SUVs had been made between May 2019 and December 2020.

Both models experienced a “loss of rearview camera image,” presenting either a blank, black, or blue screen where the rearview image should be.

Without a functioning camera, drivers face a higher risk of back-over crashes, a problem NHTSA has been cracking down on since rearview cameras became a federally mandatory safety feature in 2018.

Drivers could face a higher chance of crashing if the camera fails while backing up.

“If the driver does not heed the blank/black/blue or inverted screen warning and fails to otherwise make sure it is safe to operate the vehicle in reverse, a vehicle crash can occur,” per the NHTSA.

Stellantis, the automaker behind Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep, said car owners will be notified of the recall by mail and repair the issue free of charge.

Customers can call 800-853-1403 and refer to recall number 59C for more details.

Owners will be notified of the recall on Dodge and Ram cars starting on Wednesday, September 3, and dealers will inspect and repair affected vehicles.

According to the recall notice, the only remedy for the issue is “a rearview camera with a different design.”

This comes just over a year after Stellantis recalled 1.16 million vehicles in North America over a similar rear-view camera glitch, according to Reuters.

The 2024 recall was linked to a radio software fault in several popular car models, including the Dodge Durango, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Ram ProMaster, among others.

A Pattern of Problems

The latest camera issue was only the most recent in a string of recalls that have dogged Stellantis vehicles so far in 2025.

More than 250,000 vehicles were pulled over for life-threatening airbag defects in June, where faulty inflators risked firing metal fragments into the cabin.

How can I check if my car is part of a recall?

If you own a car that’s been recently recalled, you can easily check your VIN.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes it incredibly quick and easy for drivers to check and see if their vehicle is part of a recent (or past) recall.

The VIN checking tool also allows drivers to see whether or not the repair was completed within the last 15 years, making it an incredible tool for buyers of used cars.

All recalls initiated by the NHTSA mean free repairs for drivers, even if it’s an engine or a transmission replacement. If your VIN shows an active recall that has not been repaired, it’s important to make an appointment at your nearest dealership.

Here’s how to make an appointment for a recall:

  1. Look up your VIN using the NHTSA tool.
  2. Find out the recall number/ID from the manufacturer.
  3. Call your nearest dealership’s service center with the ID number handy, and mention you’d like to schedule an appointment to repair the recall. The repair can only be done at a dealership, as they’re authorized by the manufacturer to conduct the repair free of cost using genuine parts.
  4. Try to make the appointment as soon as possible.
  5. Once the repair is completed, the dealership will update the information associated with the VIN to reflect it’s been completed.

In July, nearly 1.2 million Ram trucks built between 2013 and 2018 were recalled for a dangerous shift-lock failure that could cause vehicles to roll away even when parked.

In the same month, 121,398 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs were sent back for repairs after faulty second-row head restraints failed to lock in place, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

April saw 48,494 Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet models flagged after their rear-view cameras failed, leaving drivers with a blank screen instead of a live feed.

79,000 Jeep Wranglers were recalled in August over an issue with the writing and tire pressure monitor system, according to the NHTSA.

The defect came from the antenna cable being able to be pinched, which can prevent the system’s warning light from illuminating.

This means a driver may not be alerted to low tire pressure.
