US OPEN chiefs have made a final decision regarding the yob who appeared to be trying to steal from Jannik Sinner’s bag.
Sinner, 24, defeated Alexander Bublik on Monday in New York to seal his place in the competition’s quarter-finals.
The Italian then packed up his tennis gear before heading back to the locker room.
But as he did so, a fan sitting courtside appeared to try and zip open the World No1’s bag before security quickly intervened.
The 2025 Wimbledon winner looked to have been taking a selfie with a fan at the time after giving his towel away to another supporter.
Sinner shook his head in anger after being alerted to the fan who had tried to open up his bag.
According to The Mail, USTA officials decided not to take any further action regarding the incident.
The fan in question was given a slap on the wrist after simply being asked to leave the US Open grounds after his actions.
That hardly seems like a punishment considering play had already finished for the day and all other fans were leaving too.
The same source claims the powers that be believed a warning was sufficient punishment for him to not try anything similar in the future.
This comes as serious questions have been risen regarding security at the US Open.
Earlier in the tournament, a millionaire businessman hit unwanted headlines after a controversial cap-nabbing incident.
After shocking Karen Khachanov in the second round last Thursday, Kamil Majchrzak signed autographs for fans in New York.
Majchrzak was filmed on camera removing his cap and trying to hand it to a child called Brock, who was in the crowd on Court 11.
Yet a brazen onlooker who was stood next to the boy swiped the item instead and quickly stuffed it into his own bag.
Majchrzak was unaware of the shocking incident at the time and the kid looked devastated as the man next to him left with the piece of sporting memorabilia.
Footage of the incident went viral and sparked outrage on the internet and the man in question – who was branded “selfish” and a “jerk” – was allegedly identified as a millionaire CEO.
He finally issued a grovelling apology on Monday, saying in a lengthy statement he made a “huge mistake” and revealed he has since given the hat to Brock.
