Matt Prater only joined Buffalo Bills 3 days before becoming hero against Ravens and had to catch red eye to make game

MATT Prater nailed the game-winning kick just three days after signing for the Buffalo Bills.

With the Bills trailing by two with no time left on the clock, Prater held his nerve to make the match-winning field goal in Orchard Park.

Prater had been signed on Friday, ahead of the Bills’ Sunday Night Football match against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bills found themselves 15 points down heading into the fourth quarter.

But a masterclass from Josh Allen saw them clinch a 41-40 victory at the death.

He threw a ten-yard touchdown to Keon Coleman, either side of rushing into the end zone himself in the final 15 minutes.

And he marshalled the final drive that allowed Prater to kick the final field goal.

The kicker took a Thursday night red eye to join Buffalo after a major injury to Tyler Bass.

The Bills were forced to put their starter on the injury reserve list on Thursday due to a pelvic injury.

Bass will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Prater was originally brought into the practice squad, but was swiftly elevated to the roster.

He went five for five with his kicks on Sunday.

After the game, the Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott praised him, saying, “He’s a true pro.

“Awesome to execute at that level with the game on the line.”

Prater went undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft before drifting around as a member of teams’ practice squads.

Eventually, he was signed by the Denver Broncos, where he was named the starting kicker in 2008.

He also led the league with the longest successful field goal that season, with a 64-yarder.

He played eight seasons with Denver before moving to the Detroit Lions for the next seven years.

In 2021, he signed for the Arizona Cardinals and in 2023, he again led the league with the longest successful field goal (62 yards).

However, it looked like his NFL career was done in 2024 when he suffered a major injury.

He tore his meniscus on his plant leg and was placed on injury reserve, but has been given a second chance by Buffalo.
