SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Downtown Sioux Falls (DTSF) received a $15,000 grant from the Gilchrist Foundation to paint a new community mural in Sioux Falls.
The theme of the mural will celebrate the Big Sioux River and will be painted by local artist Joe Schaeffer, according to a DTSF news release.
The 60-foot mural is set to be painted in the tunnel of the Cherapa Place parking ramp, and the community is invited to help with the painting of the mural during Riverfest on Saturday, Sept. 20.
“Not only is Joe an accomplished artist, but his idea to involve the community in the creation makes it so very special.” Anne Haber of Pendar Properties said in the news release.
The goal of the mural is to weave together public art, environmental awareness, and civic participation, according to the news release.
“Public art can be such a powerful tool to tell a story, and I’m excited to see the story of one of Sioux Falls’ most treasured resources, the Big Sioux River, told through this community mural.” Maren Engel, Arts Coordinator for the City of Sioux Falls said in the news release.
This will be the second large-scale parking ramp mural in downtown Sioux Falls. The 10th Street parking ramp was completed in 2023.
