Fans have already been waiting well over a year to find out where the story leads after the main characters, played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, were involved in a gunfight.
The first season premiered in February 2024, and a cluster of behind-the-scenes changes has reportedly delayed the release of Season 2.
Much of this falls on the casting side, according to the outlet, which revealed that many deals still haven’t been closed, despite numerous names rumored to play guest/recurring roles.
Among those are Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, and Gael Garcia Bernal.
However, none have been confirmed to have officially joined the cast, and the initial fall production start has been pushed to a later, unknown date.
WHAT’S TO COME
Sources told the outlet that New Regency, the company co-producing the series with Amazon MGM Studios, aims to begin pre-production at the end of the year, with a 2026 shooting schedule in mind.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the show’s return due to the shocking ending of the first season, as well as the addition of Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher, who were announced as the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith in December and February.
Mark and Sophie will replace Donald and Maya as the leading roles, though Donald will remain an executive producer on the project.
The series is based on the 2005 film of the same name, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
However, the show largely contrasts with the movie, given its different storyline and the expectant change in characters each season.
The Prime series followed John and Jane Smith, who put their secret agent skills and their relationship to the test as they battled dangers around them.
Other notable guest stars in the first season include: Paul Dano, Parker Posey, Alexander Skarsgård, and Eiza González.
The show quickly captivated audiences, becoming a Top 5 new series debut for Prime Video following its release.
It also earned 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor/Actress in a Drama Series for Donald and Maya’s performances.
Viewers feared that the delay could result in a sudden cancellation of the series before Season 2 even airs.
“That sucks! I enjoyed the first season, I hope they pick it back up,” one fan wrote on X.
“I WANT IT THOUGH,” begged another.
