Facebook finally starts paying out from $725 million settlement pot for violating user’s privacy – payout sizes revealed

PAYMENTS in Facebook’s class action lawsuit are finally being paid out, and those eligible will receive their money over the next 10 weeks.

The lawsuit against Facebook’s parent company, Meta Platforms Inc., is paying out approximately $30 to each person affected.

Angeion, the company handling the settlement’s administration, originally stated that the checks would be sent out in August.

Following a delay, payments have been sent out from September 3 and will be received over the coming weeks.

Those eligible will receive a payment notice before they get their check.

Facebook previously agreed to pay $725 million to settle claims that it sent users’ data to third-party advertisers and data brokers without consent.

The lawsuit also claimed that Facebook failed to monitor access to the data that third parties received.

The case, in which Facebook has not admitted any wrongdoing, stemmed from a 2018 scandal which involved the defunct Cambridge Analytica.

The platform was found to be using third-party data from Facebook for political advertising.

Facebook‘s settlement was finalized in May 2025 following years of appeals.

It benefits those who were Facebook users in the US at any point from May 24, 2007, to December 22, 2022.

Settlement guidelines were extended before the claim deadline of August 25, 2023, to include even more users.

The updated parameters included users who had Facebook accounts during the set period, but had since deleted them.

MILLIONS OF CLAIMANTS

Lesley Weaver, co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs, previously said in a statement how expansive this settlement was.

She emphasized: “As far as we can tell, that’s the largest number of claims ever filed in a class action in the United States.”

Around 28 million people filed a claim against Facebook to receive a share of the payout.

Temporarily deactivating your account is really easy – and you can log back in at any time to undo it:

  • Follow this link
  • Choose “Manage your account” and then scroll down to click “Deactivate your account”

Facebook has a special page for permanent account deletion, which you can find below:

It’s worth noting that you can also download a copy of your information from Facebook as a back-up:

But claimants are not being paid equally; instead, a point system is being used based on how long someone held a Facebook account.

Claimants receive one point for each month they had an account during the time period, and more points mean a higher payment.

The roughly $30 each person is being paid is based on a median estimation using the number of successful claim forms.

The exact amount that claimants will be sent is unknown.

Others that will receive payments include the legal and administrative team on the plaintiff side.

The eight named plaintiffs who represented all Facebook users will each receive $15,000.
