First look inside Kroger’s ‘deli of the future’ but it’s already struggling to compete with major rival

RETAIL giant Kroger has unveiled its new “deli of the future” in a drive to boost its services.

The prototype deli will open later this month in Kentucky, the chain has confirmed.

This 6,500 square ft open-kitchen will be a flagship project that replaces an existing store.

It will also boast a gas station, apparel department and liquor shop – and will serve made-to-order sandwiches.

Kroger says the new deli is “inspired by restaurants and the classic neighborhood deli”.

It will also offer customers space to sit and watch employees prepare their food.

Jake Cannon, president of Kroger’s Cincinnati-Dayton Division, told the Business Courier: “People are going to stop and look, because it is absolutely unlike anything we’ve done before.”

The retailer has invested $25 million to set the new location, which is scheduled to open its door on September 19.

The store housing the deli will span 101,000 square ft in total, The Cincinnati Enquirer has reported.

But Kroger is not the only major chain pouring resources into deli upgrades.

Following the announcement, customers shared their views on social media.

One Facebook user negatively compared the concept to what rival Publix already offers.

They wrote: “Trying to out do Publix since they have the sub sandwich station, it’s not gonna work because Publix chicken and subs are outstanding!”

Others complained about the store’s staffing levels, urging them to make sure any new additions have sufficient employees.

“You can make it big enough to play basketball in it, but if you don’t staff it, it doesn’t really matter,” one user posted.

“You never know one day to the next what they’re gonna have.”

But another said: “Publix may have great customer service but their prices are insane.

“I will take Kroger any day.”
