Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is not currently seeking detention outside prison, according to his lawyer, who said any such request would only be made in line with Department of Corrections criteria.
Winyat Chartmontree, the former premier’s legal counsel, gave the update after visiting Thaksin at Klong Prem Central Prison on Ngamwongwan Road today, September 15. It was the first day family visits were allowed after his seven-day initial detention period.
Winyat confirmed that Thaksin is being held under normal conditions with no special privileges. He has been placed in the ward for elderly inmates and suffers from chronic health conditions, including high blood pressure and stress. Despite this, he is making efforts to manage his health, Winyat said.
Asked about the possibility of detention outside prison, Winyat stated that the time had not yet come to file such a request. He emphasised that any petition would need to comply with established procedures and must be reviewed by the appropriate authorities.
Winyat also noted that Thaksin is under standard prison security, with no special arrangements beyond what is provided for other inmates. Family visits follow the same rules as for all prisoners.

During the visit, Winyat said they exchanged greetings and discussed work matters. He informed Thaksin that Red Shirt supporters had been offering encouragement daily. The Nation noted that Thaksin reportedly smiled and replied, “Every day?”
In response to rumours linking Thaksin to Cambodia, Winyat dismissed them as false and said legal action would be taken. He declined to comment on matters related to Thaksin’s assets, calling them private family issues.
Winyat added that he intends to visit Thaksin daily when possible and confirmed the family has not made any requests for special treatment. Thaksin himself has made no demands beyond his standard rights as an inmate.
Despite his detention, Winyat said Thaksin remains concerned about national affairs, although he could not comment on private conversations between Thaksin and his family.
