Kansas City Chiefs show class with emotional tribute to Charlie Kirk and 9/11 victims before Philadelphia Eagles game

TRIBUTES were paid to 9/11 victims and Charlie Kirk ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs took on the reigning Super Bowl champions as they looked for revenge for the defeat in the glamour tie in February.

Travis Kelce and Co had the chance to put themselves ahead in the fourth quarter but an error from Patrick Mahomes saw the chance go begging.

The Eagles went on to win the Week 2 game at Arrowhead Stadium 20-17 to leave the Chiefs with a record of 0-2 to start the 2025 NFL season.

Before kickoff, there was a tribute paid to the victims of 9/11 and to those of gun violence across the US.

This included last week’s assassination of President Donald Trump supporter Kirk at Utah Valley University.

The 31-year-old father of two was shot in the neck by a sniper while holding a debate on gun violence.

There was an announcement of the tribute from the PA system at Arrowhead Stadium.

It said: “Our nation has witnessed several acts of senseless violence in recent weeks.

“Including the deaths of schoolchildren in Colorado, church-goers in Minnesota and Charlie Kirk in Utah.

“At this time, we ask you to join us in a moment of silence as we remember those we have lost.”

The Chiefs were not the only team to put on a moment’s silence for Kirk.

The Arizona Cardinals also held a tribute for him before their game against the Carolina Panthers.

However, the Indianapolis Colts did not, as they went on to beat the Denver Broncos 29-28 at the Lucas Oil Stadium.

It followed on from Thursday’s mandated moment of silence for Kirk by the NFL which occurred before the Green Bay Packers clash with the Washington Commanders.

However, the League did insist on Friday that the Sunday games would have their own discretion to pay tribute or not.

Elected officials reaction to Charlie Kirk shooting

  • Vice President JD Vance: “Dear God, protect Charlie in his darkest hour.”
  • Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg: “Political violence must be always and totally rejected,” Buttigieg wrote on X. “Praying for him and all who may have been injured or impacted.”
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom: “The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form.”
  • Illinois Governor JB Pritzker: “The attack on Charlie Kirk is horrifying. Political violence has no place in this country and should never become the norm. I’m sending my sympathies to his family and friends at this time.”
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis: “The way to resolve political disputes is not through violence. The way to do that is to ask questions, debate. An attack on the idea that we resolve these things through reasoned debate and elections.”
  • NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani: I’m horrified by the shooting of Charlie Kirk at a college event in Utah. Political violence has no place in our country.”
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “Praying for @charliekirk11″

A statement read: “Last night’s [Thursday] moment was the league’s decision. It’s up to the clubs for this Sunday’s games.

“There have been a variety of moments of silence and tributes in-stadium and on-air in all games or a game immediately following events that rise to a national level.

“Clubs also often hold moments following a tragic event that affects their community.”
