The photograph, from September 2015. was captioned: “Oh hi, Birthday Boy.”
The old snap was taken at an RAF flypast at Goodwood Aerodrome in West Sussex.
It came just weeks after he’d left the military earlier that summer – and was taken prior to meeting former Suits actress Meghan.
Esteemed royal biographer Ingrid Seward told The Sun it was an “odd” choice of photo – but must have been “calculated”.
“I think Meghan chose that photo because it was Harry, what she would say, at his hunkiest,” said the expert.
“He looked very, sort of, masculine and young and macho, and I think that’s probably how Meghan likes to see him.”
The royal expert suggested it could even be “one of her favourite pictures” of Harry because he doesn’t appear to be burdened with “too many cares”.
“I do think it’s a bit strange that she didn’t choose one more in line with the time when they met, or maybe even one of them together, but knowing Meghan everything she does is very carefully thought through,” added Ms Seward.
The biographer claimed it could be to do with Harry’s recent four-day UK trip, which saw him carry out more Invictus duties.
The Duke also visited Kyiv in Ukraine, and vowed he wanted to do “everything possible” to help rehabilitate veterans.
Ms Seward thought it was possible Meghan chose the photo of Harry because it was taken during his time in the armed forces.
Speaking of the short, but sweet, caption: “Oh hi birthday boy”, the expert said it’s “just very Meghan… very American, it’s Californian”.
“I mean a lot of people say things like that, but coming from her, it is slightly nauseating, I think,” she added.
Meanwhile other critics claimed the post was immature and gave the impression Meghan was fawning over Harry.
“Meghan is an actress, and I don’t think she ever stops acting,” said Ms Seward.
She continued: “I think she is always trying too hard to be relatable. If only she’d take that smile off her face occasionally, and see another expression.
“It’s lovely to see someone smiling but there’s something quite unnatural about Meghan’s big smile.
“I think she makes everything slightly cringe-worthy.
“Every photograph she posts is contrived, and I think that is a shame, because we only get to see that one side of her, and it’s not a particularly attractive side.”
The expert hinted at the fact there was even a boastful element to Meghan’s post – despite it being shared to mark Harry’s milestone.
“Even this picture of Harry is about Meghan… she’s sort of saying, ‘aren’t I lucky to have this gorgeous man? And he’s a prince, and he’s the son of a king’,” she said.
Despite sharing much more of their children Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, many noticed the fact Meghan chose a photo without the kiddos present.
However our royal expert chocked this up to the Duchess wishing to protect their privacy, which she dubbed “wise”.
It came after Meghan toasted Harry’s return home with a post showing two glasses of her AsEver Rose wine in the garden of their Montecito mansion.
A nauseating caption under the post read: “When your beau is back in town…”.
During his visit, Harry saw his father for the first time in 19 months after the King flew back from Balmoral between official audiences.
During his visit to the under-fire region, Harry spoke with the minister for veteran affairs Natalia Kalmykova.
They discussed ways the Invictus Games Foundation can improve support for wounded and sick personnel and veterans.
On Wednesday, the Sussexes’ charitable foundation, Archewell, donated £369,000 to support injured children in Gaza and Ukraine.
The money will help the World Health Organisation with medical evacuations and fund prosthetics for seriously injured youths.
Also, while in the war-torn state, the Duke leapt to the defence of his controversial memoir, Spare, claiming his “conscience is clear”.
Speaking to The Guardian, the Duke said: “I know that (speaking out) annoys some people and it goes against the narrative.
“It was a series of corrections to stories already out there. One point of view had been put out and it needed to be corrected.
“It was a difficult message, but I did it in the best way possible. My conscience is clear. It is not about revenge, it is about accountability.”
After his four-day trip, a spokesperson for Harry told how he “loved catching up with old friends” and colleagues.
Harry also admitted he wants to spend more time in the country.
When asked if he would bring his children, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, he responded: “This week has definitely brought that closer.”
Meanwhile, in other Harry and Meghan news, the couple have appeared in a new Disneyland film trailer for ABC.
The Duke and Duchess were seen beaming in the video, which featured a host of huge names including Jamie Lee Curtis and Neil Patrick Harris.
Harry said in the teaser video: “Space Mountain was one of my favourite things.”
“It’s still one of your favourite rides,” Meg chimed in.
“Of course,” smiled the Duke.
The ABC News show, The Happiest Story on Earth: 70 Years of Disneyland, is set to be released on Sunday.
In another clip Harry said: “Prepare yourself, you’re going to be blown away.”
It is understood a host of celebrities, alongside the Sussexes, will be sharing their fondest memories of the attraction, and why they hold it close to their heart.
