Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of thunderstorms, flash floods and rough seas as the monsoon brings heavy rain across several regions.

The monsoon trough lies across the lower Central, upper South and the East into an active low-pressure cell over the South China Sea, while a moderate southwesterly wind prevails over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

According to the TMD, scattered thunderstorms with isolated heavy rain are expected in the central region, including Bangkok, as well as in the East and the South. Officials caution that accumulated rainfall may trigger flash floods and overflowing waterways, particularly in low-lying areas and near foothills.

Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are forecast at around 2 metres, while the lower Andaman and upper Gulf will see waves of 1 to 2 metres, rising above 2 metres during thundershowers. Mariners have been urged to proceed with caution and avoid storm-prone areas.

The weather forecast from 6pm yesterday, September 16, to 6pm today, September 17, is as follows:

In the northern region, scattered thundershowers are expected, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 22 to 25°C in the morning to highs of 31 to 34°C. Variable winds will blow at 5 to 15 km/h.

For Northeast Thailand, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani will see scattered thundershowers. Morning temperatures will be 22 to 26°C, climbing to 33 to 34°C during the day. Southeasterly winds will reach 10 to 15 km/h.

In central Thailand, scattered thundershowers with isolated heavy rain are forecast in Uthai Thani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon and Nakhon Pathom. Temperatures will range from 21 to 26°C in the morning to 31 to 34°C later in the day. Variable winds will blow at 10 to 15 km/h.
