ALDI will take over a store that was once operated by Winn-Dixie, following its multi-billion dollar buyout.
Construction is now underway on the store located in St. Johns County, Florida, to convert the Winn-Dixie into an Aldi location in the coming months.

Aldi had previously converted other Winn-Dixie spots in the state, include in Panama City, Deltona and Jacksonville, as part of its aim to shift around 220 stores to the Aldi format by 2027.
This came after Aldi purchased around 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in 2024 from the chain’s shared parent company, Southeastern Grocers.
The Winn-Dixie in St. Johns County closed on August 10, but no opening date for the Aldi store was given.
Another Winn-Dixie conversion is currently taking place in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Matt Thon, regional vice president for Aldi, told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that shoppers can expect the new store by the end of the fall.
It will mark Aldi‘s second location in the city.
The chain will take over roughly 38% of the vacant lot, which stands at 62,377-square-foot.
The rest of the space will be left available for other tenants.
EXPANSION PLANS
By the end of 2025, Aldi aims to open 225 new stores, which includes some of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys conversions.
This would mark the largest number of stores Aldi has opened in the US in a single year.
By the end of 2028, Aldi plans to open 800 new locations in the US.
According to the chain’s website, there are 35 new stores across nine states coming before the end of the year, with exact opening dates for many of them not known.
They are coming to states including Alabama, Arizona, Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
The closest new store opening is set for tomorrow, September 18 in Tuscaloose, Alabama.

BUY BACK
Aldi has just made the decision to sell 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets back to Southeastern Grocers, in combination with C&S Wholesale Grocers.
The stores that have been sold back are in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, and included the existing Winn-Dixie liquor store business.
Aldi will keep the 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores it plans to convert.
Southeastern Grocers will continue to operate the stores that have been identified for conversion until they close for the switch to an Aldi format.
Aldi said that it sold the 170 stores back so it could focus on the 220 ones it was planning to convert.
