Police sources say the incident unfolded after the two got into a disagreement at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Brooklyn, New York, CBS News reported.
Smirnova is reportedly suffering from dementia.
Kravtsov was rushed to the hospital after the attack with devastating injuries, but she couldn’t be saved.
Her daughter, Lucy Flom, said that she was called soon after nursing home employees found her mom.
At first, Flom thought that her mother had fallen, but workers told her, “No, no, that’s not it. Your mom is in bad shape,” she told CBS News.
“They told me she would not respond, but they think she could hear, so I told her the final words. I told her I loved her,” Flom said.
The emotional daughter raced to catch a flight from Florida as soon as possible, but by the time she arrived in New York, her mother had died.
Flom said she is crushed and baffled by the situation, as she’s left wondering how exactly her mom was killed.
She said that the “door was locked” when Kravtsov was attacked, so it’s unclear what happened.
Kravtsov is a Ukrainian native who survived the Holocaust after being thrown in a ghetto when she was just 5 years old, Flom told the New York Post.
“She had a big family. She lost most of her family,” said the daughter.
Kravtsov got pregnant when she was a teenager, and worked as a nurse in Ukraine before moving to the US.
Her mourning daughter said Kravtsov “sacrificed a lot” as a single mom.
“She had me when she was 18,” Flom told the Post.
“She came here to give me a good education.”
‘MOM TO ALL OF US’
Flom remembers Kravtsov as a “dedicated mother” who was “very loving” and “devoted.”
She said that her mother remarried and had two more children with her new husband.
“She was a mom to all of us,” said Flom.
“We are just grieving.
Smirnova was arrested on Tuesday, and she’s been charged with murder and criminal weapons possession.
It’s unclear whether her advanced age or reported cognitive decline will affect court proceedings, sources told the Post.
