ADAM Levine of Maroon 5 has been accused of treating Travie McCoy like ‘chopped liver’ after failing to acknowledge his part in their collaboration on hit song, Stereo Hearts.
Travie was chatting on the Go With Elmo podcast recently, delving into the musical process of creating songs with Adam and producer, Benny Blanco.
Travie worked with Benny on the song Stereo Hearts for his band Gym Class Heroes, and while crafting the track Adam expressed interest in wanting it for his own band, Maroon 5.
But Travie was firm in his decision on wanting the song for himself, in the end deciding to include The Voice judge as a featured artist where he sings the chorus on the well-known tune.
Travie noted how Adam seemed unhappy not getting the entire track for Maroon 5, and how the day after Benny wrote a new song for his band.
This song was the incredibly popular Moves Like Jagger that Travie noted, “shot Maroon 5 back into the stratosphere”.
“As much as Adam wanted Stereo Hearts for Maroon 5 I crushed it and said you can’t have that,” said Travie.
“That same night he did [Benny wrote] Moves Like Jagger. It was like here’s this other song to kind of appease that.”
Travie went on to discuss how after Maroon 5 shot into the spotlight they didn’t “need” him anymore and Adam began to treat him poorly.
“They [Maroon 5] didn’t need me to play these songs, obviously. They play them every night without me.
“Once people get what they need from you, I want to say you’re chopped liver.
“But it’s like we could do these songs without you and people think these are our songs.
“When I go to play my song it’s “Oh he’s covering Maroon 5″”.
According to Travie he doesn’t hold a grudge but he does wish Adam did more to let people know Stereo Hearts is actually his song.
“The least you could do is let motherfuckers know where these songs came from.
“I’ll never forget once I got off the stage and a radio [reporter] was once like yo you killed that Maroon 5 song.
“I literally laughed in his face and walked away.”
Stereo Hearts was the song that made Travie McCoy burst into mainstream success back in 2011.
Adam Levine is listed as a featured artist on the record, despite many people today not knowing the track is actually by Gym Class Heroes.
