Costco’s ‘speedy’ service blasted for ‘adding friction and cost’ after shopper spots ‘enormous mark up’

A COSTCO customer has blasted one of its handy services for “adding” to the cost of their shopping haul.

The convenience behind this service leads many to do their shopping online rather than trek all the way to their nearest Costco.

But one customer has taken to Reddit to blast the extra cost this imposed.

They wrote: “Today I noticed that ground bison is $31.09 on Instacart.

“In the store, I’m sure it’s about $23.

“These seems like an enormous mark up!

“This would make me reconsider the entire service, since I could go to the store for the cheapest prices.”

Some fellow Reddit users shared similar experiences of using the online serivce.

“Yes they markup and it fluctuates by product. I’ve seen it as high as 25%,” one posted.

But others were less sympathetic in their responses.

One user said: “They’re in business to make money, not to do your shopping out of the goodness of their heart.”

Another added: “If you’re able-bodied and able to get out of the house, you’d be a sucker to use Instacart.

“Services like Instacart thrived during Covid. But they all deserve to be out of business now.

“All they do is add friction and cost to the purchasing process.”

A third said: “How else is the taxi for your groceries getting paid?

“Instacart marks things up rather than charging a fee directly.”

“Similarly, Costco’s website charges slightly higher prices to pay for the free shipping,” they added.

Costco’s membership scanners

Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.

In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” it wrote.

“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.

“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.

“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop.

“Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.”
