The program is designed to help those who cannot afford to pay their heating or cooling bills.
LIHEAP can also provide in-home services for improved energy efficiency and health and safety needs.
There are only three requirements that beneficiaries need to meet to qualify for the financial assistance.
Applicants must be aged 18 years or older, they must have a valid Social Security number, and they must meet the given income thresholds.
CHECK YOUR INCOME
Using the LIHEAP website, users can see that the lower the number of people in the household, the lower the income threshold is that they cannot cross.
For example, if a household only contains one person, they can only earn up to $3,170 a month to claim.
But if a household has nine people in it, the household cannot have a combined income of more than $8,778.58 per month.
If a household has 10, the cap is set at $8,778.58 per month.
For households with more than 10 people, the income threshold is raised by $182.89 for each additional person.
As an example, if a household has 12 people, the monthly income cap is set at $9,144.36.
The income requirements are:
Household size | Income limit per month |
1 | $3,170.00 |
2 | $4,145.41 |
3 | $5,120.83 |
4 | $6,096.25 |
5 | $7,071.58 |
6 | $8,047.00 |
7 | $8,229.91 |
8 | $8,412.75 |
9 | $8,595.66 |
10* | $8,778.58 |
Anyone living in the household above 18 is allowed to apply to LIHEAP.
Recipients can only apply once each year, and the benefits are not taxed.
FEDERAL FUNDING STATUS
LIHEAP is a federally funded program in California, and the state continues to set aside money in its budget to help its residents.
For 2025, California received $239.7 million in LIHEAP funding.

And every year, US citizens are given the chance to sign up for different stimulus checks to help them financially.
In Alaska, the application process just closed to sign up for its Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) program.
Every year, Alaska pays out money to citizens who have stayed in the state for the entire calendar year.
Applicants must also abide by a few other requirements, like not being charged with any felony convictions.
This year, Alaskans were paid $1,702 as part of the PFD.
The money is paid out of the state’s surplus from its oil and mineral reserves.
Those in the state who missed out this year won’t be able to apply until June 1 next year.
