Sioux Falls woman loses over $200k in scam

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls Police are reminding the public to have discussions with their families about scams.

During police briefing, Sioux Falls Police Department Spokesperson Sgt. Aaron Benson said a woman became friends with a man over TikTok. He claimed he was overseas and needed help with his bank account since he was no longer in the country.

The woman agreed to help after the man promised to give her an account in her name with over $1 million in it, but she had to pay taxes on it first. Over the last five months, the woman gave over $200,000 to the man in Apple gift cards and Bitcoin transactions.

No suspects have been named. Benson said it would be “next to impossible” for the woman’s funds to be reclaimed.

“Take time, ask questions, don’t take people for their word when asking to do transactions involving gift cards or Bitcoin,” Benson said.
