Fans were torn on whether Allen’s gesture was a gun or signalling to the officials[/caption]

Allen completed 22-of-28 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns in the win at Highmark Stadium.

The performance saw him smash a record previously held by Patrick Mahomes.

But he may yet be hit with a financial penalty after an incident in the third quarter.

Moments after being brought down by Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks, Allen rose to his feet and seemingly made a finger gun.

The NFL has cracked down heavily this season on anything that can be interpreted as a violent gesture.

Fans on social media were divided over the gesture, with some believing Allen was making the sign of a gun.

“That’s a pistol gesture,” wrote one fan on X.

“He did that a number of times last night. We will see if he gets fine or not. My guess is no,” said another.

But others argued the 29-year-old was directing the officials towards the Dolphins defense or signalling a first down.

“He pointed at the transgressor and signaled a flag toss. Pretty easy stuff,” one viewer argued.

“I think he was just pointing for the refs to call the unnecessary roughness and then he got excited. I don’t think he actually meant it as a gun,” said another.

“Oh brother. He was pointing first down like he always does. smh,” added a third.

The NFL have already fined three high profile players this season for gestures made on the field.

In Week 2, Dallas Cowboys pair CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens were each fined $14,191.

While Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was forced to pay $14,191 for an “obscene gesture” during a 20-17 loss to the Eagles.

“Unsportsmanlike gestures like simulating or either shooting a gun or brandishing a gun, or inappropriate gestures like a throat slash, or unfortunate sexual gestures, those were up 133 per cent so that is a point of emphasis,” NFL officiating rules analyst Walt Anderson told AP earlier this season.

“The officials have made it a point of emphasis to the clubs.

It’s just one of those areas that the league wants to work actively on.

There are plenty of ways for players to be able to celebrate, and they come up with some very unique and often entertaining ways so we want them to focus on those and not the inappropriate areas.
