USA Ryder Cup star Scottie Scheffler reveals Donald Trump texts him and says President ‘feeds confidence into others’

THE greatest golfer on the planet believes the most divisive man on Earth can unite the Americans and inspire Ryder Cup glory this week.

Whether you love or loathe Donald Trump, there is no doubt that the President’s presence at Bethpage on Friday morning will cause an almighty stir.

And Scottie Scheffler, the runaway world No 1 and current Open champion, has revealed that the big orange whopper in the White House often sends him messages when he wins tournaments.

Trump is an avid golfer, who owns the former Open venue Turnberry in Ayrshire, but has often been accused of cheating on the course.

Still, four-time Major champion Scheffler is clearly a Trump fan and believes he can help the U.S team wrest the Cup back from the Europeans here in New York state.

Scheffler said: “The President is kind of funny.

“He loves the game of golf, he loves supporting golfers, and I get a call or a text from him sometimes after wins, saying ‘great job’.

“He’s one of those guys when you’re around him, he does such a good job of feeding confidence into everybody.

“That was one of the things I noticed a lot with the time I’ve spent with him, is he treats everybody the same and treats people with the utmost respect.

“Whether you’re the person serving us lunch or the caddie on the golf course or the guy who’s the president of the club, he treats everybody like they’re the greatest person in the world.”

The killing of Trump-supporting activist Charlie Kirk earlier this month means security around the President’s appearance at Bethpage will be beefed up even further on Friday’s opening day.

But Scheffler says his presence will add to the patriotic atmosphere on Long Island.

He said: “Our team as a whole, we’re very proud to be Americans. The flag means a lot to us. Being here in New York is very special as well.

“It’s been a tough few weeks for our country with some of the stuff that’s been going on, and to have our President here and for us to represent the United States of America is extremely important for us and we’re excited to be on home soil.

“I don’t think the President has any plans to address us as a team, but I’m sure if things go well, we’ll hear from him this week.”

Scheffler may be the leader of the American pack but in Rome two years ago, he and Brooks Koepka suffered a record 9&7 drubbing by Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg in the Saturday morning foursomes.

And the status of being undisputed world No 1 did not do Tiger Woods too many favours, as he posted a losing record in this team event.

THE 45th Ryder Cup takes place from September 26-28 with the US team desperate to wrestle back the crown from Europe.

Scottie Scheffler and the American side will battle Rory McIlroy’s European team in New York.

The infamous Bethpage Black course will be the venue for the latest edition of the pulsating golf tournament.

NBC will broadcast the competition in it’s entirety in the United States.

Friday’s foursomes and fourballs will be live on USA Network from 7 am ET to 6 pm ET.

Saturday’s action will take place during the same hours live on NBC.

And Sunday’s singles will also be on NBC from 12 pm ET to 6 pm ET.

Fans can sign up to Fubo TV by CLICKING HERE and watch the Ryder Cup through NBC’s channels.

Yet Scheffler, 29, insists he does not hold the same intimidating aura as Woods.

He said: “On our team, I think we have 12 guys that are all equal. I don’t think one player is more important than another.

“I’d like to think I’m not difficult to pair with people. I’d like to think of myself as a nice guy and easy to get along with.

“I’ve had different partners over the years and have had some success. I would definitely not put myself in that category.

“The difficulty you had with playing with Tiger, it could just be the aura that was Tiger Woods.

“There were some times there when he was doing nothing but winning golf tournaments and just beating the absolute c**p out of people time and time again.

“And in terms of that match with Viktor and Ludvig, do I carry anything from it? No. I lost a point. It was a tough day.

“I came back the next day, played my best, ended up halving a match with Jon Rahm and we lost the Cup.”
