Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned residents nationwide of heavy rain, thunderstorms and rough seas as the monsoon trough and a nearby typhoon intensify.

The TMD warned that the North and Northeast remain under the influence of the monsoon trough, while the southwest monsoon is prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Gulf of Thailand, and much of the southern, central and eastern regions. Officials urged residents in the upper country to be on alert for flash floods and river overflows, particularly near foothills and lowlands.

Typhoon Ragasa, currently swirling over the South China Sea, is expected to approach southern China via Hong Kong and the Gulf of Tonkin by tomorrow, September 25. The storm is forecast to weaken into a tropical system before landfall in upper Vietnam, but its influence will strengthen Thailand’s monsoon between September 23 and 26.

The weather forecast for 6pm yesterday, September 23, to 6pm today, September 24 is as follows:

In the North, fairly widespread thundershowers are expected, with isolated heavy rainfall in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 22 to 25°C at night, rising to 30 to 33°C during the day. Winds will be variable at 5 to 15 km/h.

The northeastern region will also see widespread thundershowers, with heavy rain likely in provinces such as Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchathani. Minimum temperatures are expected to range from 23 to 25°C, with maximum temperatures between 31 and 34°C. Winds will be variable at 10 to 20 km/h.

In the central region, scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are forecast for areas including Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lopburi, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi. Night-time lows will range from 23 to 26°C, while daytime highs will reach 33 to 35°C. Winds from the southwest will blow at 10 to 20 km/h.

Eastern Thailand will experience fairly widespread thundershowers, with isolated heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi and Trat. Minimum temperatures will be between 23°C and 28°C, and maximums will reach 30 to 34°C. Southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 km/h are expected, with waves around 2 metres high, rising higher in thunderstorms.

Along the South’s east coast, isolated thundershowers are likely in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. Temperatures will range from 22 to 26°C at night to 32 to 36°C during the day. Southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 km/h will bring seas about 1 metre high, rising to 1 to 2 metres offshore and over 2 metres during storms.

On the South’s west coast, isolated thundershowers are forecast, mainly in Ranong and Phang Nga. Night-time temperatures will be 24 to 26°C, while daytime highs will reach 31 to 34°C. From Phang Nga upwards, southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 km/h will create seas around 2 metres high, rising further in storms. From Phuket southwards, winds of 15 to 35 km/h will bring seas 1 to 2 metres high, with higher levels during thunderstorms, according to the TMD.

Bangkok and the surrounding metropolitan area can expect fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rain. Minimum temperatures will range from 25 to 27°C, while maximums will reach 32 to 35°C. Winds from the southwest will blow at 10 to 20 km/h.
