The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of heavy rains, flash floods and high seas as a strong monsoon and an incoming storm intensify across the country.

Residents in the North, Northeast and East should prepare for widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy to very heavy rain between yesterday, September 24, and tomorrow, September 26. Flash floods, overflowing rivers and landslides are possible, especially in foothill areas, waterways and low-lying zones.

The weather forecast for 6pm yesterday to 6pm today, September 25, is as follows:

Northern Thailand will experience fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rain expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Lampang, Lamphun, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit and Phetchabun. Minimum temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C, with maximum temperatures between 31 and 34°C. Winds are variable at 10 to 15 km/h.

The Northeast faces fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy to very heavy rain forecast for Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Surin, Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will dip to 23 to 25°C at night and rise to 31 to 34°C during the day. Winds are variable at 10 to 25 km/h.

In the central provinces, scattered thundershowers are predicted with isolated heavy rain in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Saraburi and Kanchanaburi. Minimum temperatures will be between 23 and 25°C, while maximum daytime highs are expected to reach 33 to 35°C. Southwesterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 25 km/h.

The East will see fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy to very heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. Nighttime minimum temperatures are forecast at 24 to 27°C, with daytime highs ranging from 29 to 33°C. Southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 km/h will prevail, with sea waves around 2 metres high, increasing to over 2 metres in thundershowers.

Along the east coast in southern Thailand, isolated thundershowers are expected, particularly in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Surat Thani. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C at night, climbing to 33 to 36°C in the day. From Surat Thani northwards, southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 km/h will generate waves of 1 to 2 metres, rising to around 2 metres offshore and higher during storms.

From Nakhon Si Thammarat southwards, winds will blow at 15 to 35 km/h, with seas about 1 metre high near the shore, 1 to 2 metres offshore, and above 2 metres in thundershowers.

The west coast will experience scattered thundershowers with isolated heavy rain in Ranong. Minimum temperatures will stay between 24 and 26°C, while maximum daytime highs are predicted at 31 to 34°C.

From Phuket northwards, southwesterly winds of 20 to 40 km/h will create waves 2 to 3 metres high, rising above 3 metres during storms. From Krabi southwards, winds will be slightly weaker at 20 to 35 km/h, with seas around 2 metres high and exceeding 2 metres during thundershowers, according to the TMD.

Bangkok and surrounding areas will face scattered thundershowers, with minimum nighttime temperatures forecast at 25 to 27°C and daytime highs of 32 to 35°C. Southwesterly winds will blow at 10 to 25 km/h.
