Young crash victim dies after 11-year battle for justice

After a long and heartbreaking 11-year struggle, the young victim of an illegal street racing crash, Nong Cartoon, has passed away peacefully.

Her mother, 45 year old Saranya Chamni, shared the devastating news yesterday evening via Facebook, announcing the death of her daughter.

At 6.52pm yesterday, June 11, Nong Cartoon, who had been battling the effects of severe brain trauma since the tragic crash, passed away.

“Sleep well my good girl. I hope you become an angel, supporting me from heaven,” Saranya wrote on her restaurant’s business page, Mother’s Grill Steak House.

The crash that changed their lives forever occurred on September 19, 2014, when Wanthanan “Namphueng” Phiewkliang lost control of her speeding modified pickup truck, crashing into the Lung Yai Steakhouse in Bang Bon district, Bangkok. Phanuthat Sasiphan, Saranya’s husband, died shielding their five year old daughter, Nong Cartoon, from the impact.

While the young girl survived, the crash caused her severe brain trauma, leaving her with only 25% brain function and robbing her of both her vision and ability to communicate.

Namphueng, the driver responsible for the crash, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, but her sentence was reduced to just one year due to her confession and lack of a previous criminal record.

Despite this, Nong Cartoon’s family has yet to receive any compensation, with 6.3 million baht still owed to them by Namphueng, as ordered by the Criminal Court, reported Bangkok Post.

The case has drawn widespread criticism, with many questioning the lack of justice for Nong Cartoon and her family. Saranya has been the sole caregiver for Nong Cartoon for the past 11 years, shouldering the immense burden of her daughter’s care.

Earlier this year, Saranya considered allowing her daughter to pass away peacefully after Nong Cartoon developed a severe lung infection, which would have required her to live on a ventilator for the rest of her life.

At the time of her death, Nong Cartoon was just 16 years old. Her mother ended her post with a final, heartbreaking message: “Rest in peace and I wish you peace in the next life.”
