Bryson DeChambeau blows a fuse in astonishing caddy row as Ryder Cup tensions boil over

FURIOUS Bryson DeChambeau blew a fuse as the US lost their heads – and probably the Ryder Cup – on a chaotic day at Bethpage Black.

The American superstar was playing in the four-balls during the Saturday afternoon session when he went on an angry tirade.

The big-hitting ace joined up with Scottie Scheffler against Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose for an all-star match-up.

But it was an incident on the 15th hole that had Ryder Cup fans talking on an explosive day at the historic public course.

It all started after Rose was lining up a 15ft birdie attempt on the 15th hole, which would all-but win them a point for Europe.

DeChambeau’s caddie Greg Bodine then attempted to walk across his line, which sparked a furious reaction from the Englishman.

He berated him before going on to drain the putt and then celebrating in the direction of DeChambeau and his caddie.

The American then sunk an 11-footer to continue to match, which the US were three down in at the time, before giving it back to the European.

As the two walked off the green, the two then exchanged furious words, which continued up to the 16th tee box.

Fleetwood and his caddie, Ian Finnis, then joined in on the war-of-words, as did Scheffler’s Ted Scott.

He was seen in a heated discussion with European team vice captain Francesco Molinari, who had to be split up by Fleetwood.

Rose then made a 6ft par putt to seal the 3-and-2 win on the 16th hole, adding another point to Europe’s sizable lead.

The golfers and the caddies shook hands, before Scott talked to Molinari, and it ended on better terms.

Rose explained afterwards: “I was waiting to putt, the boys were obviously working on their read, obviously going through a lot of their sort of whatever, calculations and bits and pieces.

“So I sort of waited a few seconds. Then I felt like they came up again, and I was like, ‘It’s my putt, right?’

“Maybe I didn’t say it as politely as I could have said it in the moment, but by no means was there any disrespect or anything like that.

“But obviously it was taken the wrong way.

“I said to the boys, ‘If you want me to say, “Excuse me, please,”’ then yeah, my bad.”

Rose then spoke to the pair after the match and hoped the incident had all blown over following another dominant win.

He added: “Listen, I hope so. I spoke to the boys. It should be over, in my opinion. There was no intent behind it whatsoever.

“I admire (Scheffler) more than anybody else out on tour with the way he goes about his business, the way he goes about his life, and obviously just huge respect all around.

“But from my point of view, it was something that was sort of taken in a way that wasn’t intended in a way, but obviously it was a big putt, big moment.

“I’m trying to control my environment as well in that scenario. We’re all competitors, right? I think that’s all within the framework of what we’ve got to do out here.”

It was one of many explosive incidents on a heated day at Bethpage, as security was ramped up across the course.

Fans were kicked out as Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry battled through a torrent of abuse to win their draining match.

“It’s one moment out of two days of a lot of golf and a lot of great golf,” Fleetwood added.

“You’re out there and, yeah, it happens. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.”
