‘Unacceptable’ – Indianapolis Colts receiver apologizes after shocking error cost his team a touchdown

INDIANAPOLIS Colts receiver apologized after his shocking error cost his team a touchdown.

The Colts were 3rd and 4 against the Los Angeles Rams in the third quarter, with the scoreboard reading 13-10 against them.

However, Daniel Jones picked out Adonai Mitchell running down the left sideline.

Mitchell made a spectacular reception, jumping in front of Derion Kendrick before spinning the cornerback and racing towards the end zone.

He then shrugged off another attempted tackle from Kendrick and started to celebrate the score.

The receiver stretched out his arm with the ball, but managed to lose control of it as he crossed the goal line.

The 22-year-old tried to recover his fumble, but the ball bobbled out of play before he could reach it.

The referees convened before making their ruling, but Mitchell did not look confident as his teammates rushed over to him.

Replays showed that the ball slipped out of his hand just inches before he reached the end zone, leading to the 75-yard touchdown not being given.

The ruling stated, “The ball was loose prior to crossing the goal line. The resulting play is a touchback.”

Speaking after the game, Mitchell said, “It definitely stings.

“The ball was put in my hand to make a play for the team, and it was a matter of losing focus and just to play.

“That just can’t happen. Just unacceptable.

“I’ve just got to be better for the team and for the organization.”

Not only was the touchdown not counted, but the Colts gave the ball back to the Rams.

This would also have been Mitchell’s first career NFL touchdown, having been drafted in 2024.

Later in the game, Mitchell made another major error.

He committed a holding penalty while blocking, negating Jonathan Taylor’s spectacular 53-yard touchdown run.

The Colts were forced to punt a few plays later, and the Rams started the game-winning drive on the ensuing possession.

Matthew Stafford picked out Tutu Atwell for a brilliant 88-yard TD in the final minutes.

This 27-20 victory has given the Rams their first 3-1 record since they won the Super Bowl in 2021.

The Colts, on the other hand, lost their first game of the season after starting 3-0.
