Qerim’s decision, which came two weeks ago, was abrupt, but it took place shortly after it was reported she would leave at the end of the year.
After the news was revealed, the veteran TV host chose not to return to the Worldwide Leader in Sports.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Qerim will moderate a Q&A with UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley on Wednesday night.
The event will take place at the Student Union Theatre on the school’s Storrs campus.
Qerim is a 2006 UConn graduate.
She grew up in Cheshire, Connecticut, and is a renowned Huskie fan.
Qerim had been with ESPN since 2005 before her stunning departure.
“After much reflection, I’ve decided it’s time to close this incredible chapter and step away from First Take,” Qerim wrote on her Instagram story on September 15.
“Hosting this show has been one of the greatest honours of my career.
“Every morning, I had the privilege of sharing the desk with some of the most brilliant, passionate and entertaining voices in sports – and with all of you, the best fans in the world.
“I’m so grateful for what this journey has given me: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to be part of something truly special.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for welcoming me into your homes.
“Stay tuned. With love and gratitude, Molly.”
The following morning on First Take, Stephen A. Smith performed Qerim’s usual duties and sent a tribute to the former host.
“She’s hosted First Take for ten years and elevated the show with her grace, her expertise, incomparable kindness,” Smith said.
“She’s been an enormous part of our success for a decade.
“Not only did she keep me and many others in line, she did it with dignity, and class, and kindness to say the least.
“We’ll miss her and wish her every blessing on her future.
“I personally am grateful to her for her friendship.
“I will miss spending every weekday morning with her right by my side.”
In a recent interview with The Athletic, ESPN president of content Burke Magnus shared that Qerim was going to quit First Take regardless, but they wanted to retain her.
Magnus added that the network will have a 30-45 day period to test different hosts before naming Qerim’s permanent replacement.
