‘That’s a first’ – George Pickens didn’t know NFL games could tie until after Cowboys-Packers conclusion

DALLAS COWBOYS wide receiver George Pickens has admitted he never knew an NFL game could end in a tie.

The Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers could not be separated with a score of 40-40 on Sunday.

Since the introduction of overtime in 1974 only 30 NFL games have ended in a tie.

Due to the rarity of the outcome, some players have never been part of a game with such a result.

And that was exactly the case for Pickens.

After the game, the wide receiver admitted he never even knew a tie was possible in the NFL.

He said: “I’ve never been a part of a tie in my life. I didn’t even know football worked like that.

“I thought we just would start another quarter right now and keep going.

“But a tie? That’s a first time, yeah.”

Pickens is not the first player to be unaware of the rules.

In 2008, Donovan McNabb said he did not know that games could end with the score level.

NFL games can only end in a tie in the regular season.

For a game to end in a tie, the two teams must finish the initial four quarters and the overtime period with the same points total.

In the playoffs, a winner must be determined due to the knockout format.

If a winner cannot be decided at the end of a fourth overtime period in the playoffs, there is another coin toss and play continues until a winner is declared.
