‘We will do better’ – Rory McIlroy sent formal apology after wife Erica hit with beer amid sickening Ryder Cup abuse

RORY McILROY has been sent a formal apology after his wife Erica Stoll was hit by beer amid sickening abuse at the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy played a starring role as Team Europe stormed to glory at Bethpage last weekend.

Shane Lowry netted the winning put as the visitors retained their title in New York.

But the Ryder Cup was overshadowed by the constant abuse aimed at Team Europe by American fans.

Spectators chanted “f**k you Rory” throughout the tournament while also insulting his family.

However, the vile abuse crossed a further line when one thug hurled a beer at McIlroy’s wife Erica.

She was said to have had “tears streaming down her face” after being struck by the missile.

And now, the PGA of America have sent an apology to McIlroy for the disgraceful scenes.

Chief Derek Sprague revealed he had personally said sorry to the Northern Irishman and Erica for the behaviour of home fans.

And he insists that future Ryder Cups held in the States will see far less thuggish behaviour.

Sprague told the Athletic: “I sent a long email to share with Rory and Erica and just told him that we will do better in the future.

“I’m the CEO now. I don’t condone this type of behaviour. This is not good for the game of golf.

“It’s not good for the Ryder Cup. It’s not good for any of the professional athletes and we will do better.

“I’m disappointed in fan behaviour, disappointed in the first tee and the MC, it’s just not who we are. I was really disappointed.”

At the end of the tournament, McIlroy opened up over the abuse Erica had faced.

He said: “It should be off-limits but obviously it wasn’t this week. Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman.

“She handled everything this week with class, poise and dignity like she always has.

“I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”
