The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is tightening its monitoring of water levels in major dams and ensuring a stable electricity supply as heavy rainfall continues to lash northern, northeastern, and central Thailand.

Assistant Governor for Renewable Energy Generation, Chawalit Kankam, said EGAT is following weather forecasts from the Meteorological Department, which predicts moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions due to strong monsoon activity.

“EGAT is monitoring water levels in all major dams and maintaining system stability to ensure reliable electricity distribution. We have also prepared emergency measures should the situation worsen.”

He confirmed that despite flooding in Uttaradit and Sukhothai, electricity distribution in the north and central regions remains unaffected. EGAT has also mobilised volunteers to assemble survival kits for flood-affected residents.

The organisation’s immediate focus is on three major dams: Sirikit, Bhumibol, and Ubolratana, which are operating under careful control to manage high water inflows while avoiding downstream flooding.

In the northern region, Sirikit Dam currently holds 9,058 million cubic metres of water, or 95.25% of its capacity, with space for a further 452 million cubic metres. To prepare for the end of the rainy season, its discharge rate has been increased from 15 to 25 million cubic metres per day.

Meanwhile, Bhumibol Dam holds 11,755 million cubic metres (87.3% of capacity) and has reduced its discharge from 10 to 5 million cubic metres per day to balance the overall system. Together, the two dams are releasing no more than 30 million cubic metres daily, in line with the Water Resources Management Subcommittee’s directive to prevent excessive flow through the Chao Phraya Dam.

In the northeast, Ubolratana Dam currently holds 2,148 million cubic metres of water (88.35% of capacity) and has cut its discharge to ease flooding downstream.

Collectively, EGAT’s major dams now contain 52,671 million cubic metres of water, around 86% of their total capacity, with room for a further 8,806 million cubic metres, according to KhaoSod.

Chawalit assured that “all dams remain structurally sound and under control.”

Residents can monitor real-time water levels via EGAT’s website at water.egat.co.th or the EGAT ONE mobile app.
