He was later arrested for his role and was left in hospital in a stable condition.
Fox announced earlier Sunday that he would be removed from the broadcast team for the Raiders vs Colts game.
And Fox NFL Kickoff began Sunday with a statement about former quarterback Sanchez.
Thompson hosts the show, which begins at 11 am ET as the lead in to Fox NFL Sunday.
She said, “Friday night in Indianapolis, one of our team members Mark Sanchez, was involved in an incident that we are still trying to wrap our heads around.
“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, his family and all of those involved.”
Fox replaced Sanchez on Sunday’s broadcast with Brady Quinn, who joined Chris Myers in the booth.
WTHR reported that a person was detained after the violent altercation that saw one person stabbed and another with injuries “consistent with being in a physical altercation”.
The stabbing took place in an alley near Washington and Senate Avenue outside the Loughmiller’s Pub & Eatery.
The person who allegedly stabbed Sanchez claimed he was acting in self-defence and that Sanchez was the aggressor, FOX59/CBS4 reported, citing police sources.
Officers said that an argument broke out between two people, which led to the altercation.
The U.S. Sun reached out to the Indianapolis Metro Police for comment and was given the following statement:
“The incident involved two adult males, resulting in one man receiving lacerations and the other sustaining injuries consistent with stab wounds.
“Detectives believe this was an isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence.
“Both individuals, who are not local residents, have been identified.
“IMPD Aggravated Assault detectives are continuing the investigation and have reviewed video footage of the incident.
“Both men received medical treatment.
“The man with the apparent stab wounds remains hospitalized in stable condition.”
“The case will be presented to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision,” it added.
“It is the practice of the IMPD Public Affairs Office to not identify victims or suspects in incidents, unless the suspect is arrested, charged, or being sought.”
