Bill Belichick turns to son of former NFL quarterback after disastrous start to college football coaching career

BILL Belichick turned to the son of a former NFL quarterback after the disastrous start to his college football coaching career.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are currently 2-3 after back-to-back losses under new coach Belichick.

Max Johnson, son of Super Bowl-winning QB Brad, received his first start for the Tar Heels since last year’s season opener.

Belichick was forced to turn to Johnson after first-choice starter, Gio Lopez, was ruled out with a lower-body injury.

North Carolina slipped to a 38-10 defeat to the Clemson Tigers, who have had a similarly challenging start to the season.

Clemson QB Cade Klubnik threw for over 250 yards and four touchdowns in the game.

Johnson, on the other hand, struggled within the game.

He managed over 200 yards at a 62% completion rate, but failed to throw any scoring passes.

The 24-year-old replaced Lopes in the Tar Heels’ previous blowout to the UCF Knights a week prior.

He did find the end zone with a pass on that occasion, but it wasn’t enough to change the result as his side lost 34-9.

North Carolina’s other defeat came in the opening game of the season to the TCU Horned Frogs.

This was another game Johnson played in.

These have been his first games since he suffered a major leg injury against Minnesota in the first week of the 2024 season.

Johnson’s father, Brad, led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl championship back in 2002.

He was originally selected in the 9th round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

This makes him the lowest-drafted quarterback to ever win the NFL.

He was originally picked up as a third-string QB by the Vikings, but eventually rose to be a starter.

But he was never consistently the first choice in Minnesota and moved to the Washington Redskins for two seasons before heading to Florida.

In his first season with the Bucs, he broke the team records for passing yards (3,406), completions (340), and attempts (540).

The following year, he led the team to the Super Bowl.

And alongside this, he broke the team record for most touchdown passes in a season (24).

He broke that record again the following year with 27 this time.
