Roads flood in northeast SD, western MN

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Travelers in some areas of northeastern South Dakota and central western Minnesota are advised to be cautious as heavy overnight rain caused flooding on multiple secondary roads.

In South Dakota, Marshall County Emergency Manager Logan Roehr said when he checked roads very early Friday morning, “We had many second roads with water over them.”

In Minnesota, the Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office posted at 8 a.m. on Facebook that several roads in the county had water over them. The roads includes U.S. Highway 75 and Big Stone County Road 12, County Road 25 and 360th Street and several others.

KELOLAND Meteorologist Scot Mundt said a swath of heavy rain covered southern Marshall County, areas near Britton and around Sisseton, Big Stone City and into Ortonville, Minnesota.

Amounts ranged from 7.6 inches near Claremont, a reported 5.25 inches at Lake City, 4.63 inches near Sisseton and 4.18 inches near Big Stone City. Mundt clarified those were 24 hour totals as of around 7 a.m. Friday.

Roehr said he was told 5 to 6 1/2 inches fell in some parts of Marshall County. Over in Big Stone City, Deb Wiik said about 7 inches of rain fell. That included in nearby Ortonville, which is just across the Big Stone Lake from Big Stone City.

“The lake is up,” Wiik said. “The rivers are rising.”

Wiik said at about 10:45 a.m. Friday that there was “a lot of flooding around the lake. It’s not into houses but the lake shore has disappeared for a while.”

Some of the docks may need to be raised, Wiik said.

The Big Stone Sheriff’s Office said property owners should monitor the lake and wind conditions in case they need to raise docks and pay attention to watercraft.

Areas of northeastern South Dakota got rain on Thursday. Wiik said Big Stone City got about two inches.

“The heaviest rain came Thursday evening and overnight,” Mundt said.

Some sections of road could be covered with water for several days, the Big Stone Sheriff’s Office said.

Roehr said some water may be receding on some road sections but travelers still need to be cautious.
