The US Sun has reported on the rise of Scan & Go at Sam’s Club, with the store’s plan to scrap self-checkouts in the future.
It comes as the retailer plans to step into the future and change shopping.
Sam’s Club President and CEO Chris Nicholas said: “This is one of the fastest, most scalable transformations happening in retail today.
“We’re investing with intention — in our fleet, our associates and the member experience — to become the world’s best club retailer.
“We are not limited by our physicality — we are enabled by it.
“Our omnichannel model creates more opportunities to engage with members where they are, and how they want to shop.”
Scan & Go was first launched at Sam’s Club in April 2024, but is recent push has pout of shoppers, with shoppers vowing to boycott, per The US Sun.
SCAN & GO SNAFU
Now, a shopper has spoken out on social media after being caught up in a stealing scandal at her Sam’s Club store.
The “embarrassed” customer posted her rant to Facebook, revealing she was accused of stealing a $175 piece of meat by staff after using Scan & Go.
The post from May 28 said: “Sam’s Club in south county today I’ve never been so embarrassed in my life.
“I spent $1300 in that store and got accused of stealing $175 piece of meat. I find it absolutely appalling.
“I use the scan and go and I knew that I paid for it but I didn’t have my glasses on so I couldn’t see the receipt and I trusted the lady at the door that told me I didn’t pay for it so I went back in to pay for it
“Then I squinted my eyes to find that I actually did pay for it. I am so aggravated so embarrassed I will never go back to Sam’s ever I do not like being treated like that.
“The lady at the checkout counter was super nice and the lady at the customer service was nice but they need to figure that out.”
What is Walmart’s Scan and Go?

Walmart’s Scan and Go was made to save time for shoppers
Walmart’s Scan and Go system was created to help customers scan items as they shop, pay, and leave without waiting in long checkout lines.
The retailer describes the new system to be done in a few easy steps:
- Customers first need to have the Walmart app downloaded on their phones with their location access enabled.
- On the Store Mode landing page, shoppers must click the Scan and Go option.
- Customers can scan each item and place them in their carts as they shop.
- At the end, they’ll be prompted to view the cart to make sure the quantity on the app matches the ones in their carts.
- Shoppers will press “Check Out” and head to a self-checkout kiosk.
- They’ll be prompted to scan the provided QR code at the register and confirm their payment method.
- Once the transaction is complete, shoppers can leave the store without worry.
She then went on to say that this had happened to her sister, suggesting a pattern of problems at the club.
The shopper continued: “Not only to me but it happened to my sister Vera too. She paid for a $450 blowup thing and they actually called her a thief.
“I’m not saying people don’t steal, but I am saying they should really really pay better attention and do their job better cause that is just uncalled for and unacceptable.”
COMMENT FURY
In the comments, shoppers shared their shock at the story, while Sam’s Club issued an apology.
The company wrote in the comments: “Thank you so much for reaching out to us here at Sam’s Club.
“We apologize for any troubles caused. Please send us a PM through here so that we may look into this further.”
Others took the time to share their sorrow at what had happened.
One person wrote: “Write a formal email to the head of that company!!!”
And another said: “Sorry that happened to you. People suck and do need to pay more attention!”
It is difficult to tell if this is an issue with the Scan & Go system itself, given that the mistake was made by a human employee, not the tech.
If the shopper was accused of not paying, it is unclear why if she had her receipt, which was shown in the post.
The US Sun has reached out to Sam’s Club for further comment.
