When President Donald Trump’s Justice Department released a large dump of files from the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case on Friday afternoon, people immediately noticed the huge presence of redactions throughout the release, with hundreds of pages completely blacked out.
The law passed by Congress compelling the release of the Epstein files allowed for certain redactions to protect innocent identities, like the information of some of Epstein’s victims — but the redactions appeared to go well beyond that, apparently trying to hide the identities of almost every powerful figure known to be tied to Epstein except for former President Bill Clinton.
But some commenters on social media, after scouring through the files, found at least some things this aggressive redaction process missed — including things that reveal details about Trump’s own relationship with the deceased financier.
“Guess DOJ forgot to redact these pictures of Trump found in Epstein’s desk drawer,” wrote the account for the Lincoln Project, showing images that feature a photo of Trump with Epstein’s jailed sex trafficking accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, and what appeared to be another of Trump with a number of young women.
“OOPS they forgot to redact this one! Zoom in!” wrote hedge fund manager Spencer Hakimian, focused on the same images.
“The check Trump gave to Epstein for $22,500 for a ‘fully depreciated *redacted woman’s name*’ has shown up in a NEW photo in the Epstein files, where Epstein is pictured holding the check standing next to a woman,” wrote Democratic youth influencer Harry Sisson. “Looks like Trump forgot to redact this!”
But pictures were not the only thing in the trove of data that the administration might have forgotten to redact, if they were trying to minimize embarrassment to the president.
“They forgot to redact this page,” wrote YouTuber Keith Edwards, posting a page which stated, “During one of Doe’s encounters with Epstein, he took her to Mar-a-Lago where he introduced her to its owner, Donald J. Trump. Introducing 14-year-old Doe to Donald J. Trump, Epstein elbowed Trump playfully asking him, referring to Doe, ‘This is a good one, right?’ Trump smiled and nodded in agreement. They both chuckled and Doe felt uncomfortable, but, at the time, was too young to understand why.”
