Five people were wounded Friday night in a shooting in Northwest Washington, the D.C. police said. None of the wounds appeared to be life-threatening, according to the police.
The number of victims appeared to be one of the largest in the city in nearly two months.
The shooting occurred about 9:20 p.m. at Fifth and N Streets NW. Three victims were found at the scene, and two others at a hospital.
No information was available immediately about any motive for the gunfire. However police said they did not think the shooting was a random act. They did not give a reason for this belief.
Names and ages of the victims were not available and there was no information about connections among them.
Police were looking for “multiple suspects” who left the scene in a black automobile with D.C. license tags. The vehicle was last seen in the 1200 block of Fifth Street NW, which is between M and N Streets NW.
At least two other shootings in city in the past few month have also left five people wounded. On Nov. 2, three women and two men were shot outside a club in the 2300 block of Bladensburg Road NE, the police said.
A man was arrested in that incident.
About a week before that, five people were shot near Howard University on homecoming weekend. One person opened fire after a brief dispute between two groups, police said. None of the victims was a Howard student.
That shooting occurred Oct. 24, on the city’s most violent night since the law enforcement surge began in early August. Gunfire wounded 11 people and killed one in seven shootings scattered across D.C.
The three victims found at the scene of last night’s shooting were taken to hospitals by the D.C. fire and EMS department. They were conscious and breathing when found.
Two other men who had been wounded in the same shooting went to a hospital by private means, the police said.
The shooting site is in a largely residential area about a quarter mile west of Dunbar High School and about the same distance north of New York Avenue. The immediate vicinity of the intersection includes rowhouses, a church and a corner store.
