A series of tremors rocked Mae Hong Son yesterday morning, as a 1.9-magnitude earthquake hit the region, while neighbouring Myanmar experienced five separate quakes, including one minor tremor and four microquakes.
The Meteorological Department of Thailand reported that the quake in Mae Hong Son occurred at 10.53am yesterday, June 18, with its epicentre located in Mae Na Toeng subdistrict, Pai district. The tremor, which struck at a depth of 2 kilometres, had a magnitude of 1.9 — classified as a microquake, which typically isn’t felt by most people but is recorded by seismographs.
Despite the low magnitude, the tremor still prompted concern among locals. According to the department, earthquakes with magnitudes less than 2.9 are classified as microquakes, usually undetectable to the human senses, while those with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.9 are considered minor and often felt but rarely cause damage.
But the quakes didn’t stop in Thailand. Myanmar was also rattled on the same day with five seismic events. A 2.0-magnitude quake hit Myanmar at 12.37am at a depth of 10km. The tremor’s epicentre was located 152km northwest of Mae Hong Son’s Mae Sariang district.
At 1.47am, a stronger 3.3-magnitude quake struck Myanmar, around 93km northwest of Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district. The region continued to shake, as another 2.3-magnitude quake hit at 5.02am, followed by a 2.6-magnitude tremor at 1.06pm.
The final earthquake of the day, registering 2.4 magnitude, occurred at 1.12pm, all occurring at depths of around 10km, reported The Nation.
Though these tremors were felt by many, particularly in the border regions between Thailand and Myanmar, none of the quakes caused significant damage or injuries.
Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to stay alert. While tremors of such low magnitude are typically not dangerous, the occurrence of multiple quakes in such a short period has raised questions about seismic activity in the region.
On May 5, a series of mild earthquakes occurred, with the strongest being a 4.8 magnitude quake near the Thai-Myanmar border.
Additionally, on May 18, a 2.1 magnitude quake was recorded in Mae Hong Son, Thailand. These smaller quakes have not caused significant damage but serve as reminders of the region’s seismic activity.
